The Unified Excitation Synchronous Motor (UESM) is Cooled Motors’ proprietary magnetless motor technology, developed to push the limits of electric drive performance. It introduces a new approach to electric machine innovation, combining multilayer system-level innovations across electromagnetics, excitation, and control.
UESM eliminates rare-earth permanent magnets while avoiding the need for additional external power electronics. It is designed to operate with standard off-the-shelf three-phase inverters (two-level, three-leg inverter).
By rethinking how excitation is generated and controlled within the motor, UESM is designed to deliver superior torque, power density and efficiency. The rotor topology is also engineered for superior mechanical and thermal capabilities, supporting higher peripheral speeds and enabling more compact, high-performance electric drive systems.

The Wound-Field Synchronous Motor (WFSM, also known as the Externally Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM), has been widely considered the only the only topology capable of delivering the continuous-power range, high torque, and high efficiency required for passenger EVs and heavy-duty applications. However, the EESMs being developed for release in the next few years have complex/large/expensive oil cooling systems, can’t match the performance of PM motors and require specialist power electronics.
