Electrically Excited Synchronous Motors (EESMs), also known as Wound-Field Synchronous Motors, are widely recognised as the only long-term replacement for rare-earth permanent-magnet motors (PMMs) by the industry. They supply constant power range, high peak torque/power and high efficiency. These are essential requirements for OEMs.
But the current EESM design come with major drawbacks and challenges, hence they have not been widely adopted.
Current EESMs come with complex rotors winding, suffer from severe rotor heat limitation, require sliprings or excitor, and they need specialist power-electronics. These issues increase cost, weight, and complexity, forcing OEMs to redesign their power electronics, controls, or even full platforms.

We’ve engineered the first drop-in, magnet-free motor that removes every historical barrier to adoption, allowing OEMs to replace their PM motors with magnetless without the need for any changes to platform, or power electronics without power compromises common to magnetless topologies.

Neodymium rare-earth magnets deliver unparalleled power density, efficiency, and controllability. Replacing a rare-earth magnet machine with magnetless counterpart while maintain the same wide range performance, weight, size, and efficiency is a true challenge.
The Wound-Field Synchronous Motor (WFSM, also known as the Externally Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM), has been widely considered the only the only topology capable of delivering the continuous-power range, high torque, and high efficiency required for passenger EVs and heavy-duty applications. However, EESM being developed for release in the next few years have complex/large/expensive oil cooling systems, can’t match the performance of PM motors and require specialist power electronics. Our breakthrough UESM topology and UniSync™ motor eliminates these issues, heralding the way for the replacement of rare-earth permanent magnet motors.

In a well-designed would field motor, a steady continuous power can be achieved over a speed range extending from the base speed to the maximum speeds
UESMs are the only magnet-free motors that can match PM performance, making them the natural successor to rare-earth machines. We focus on continuous power because that’s what really limits EV performance, efficiency, and cost.
